Environment-Seth and Maddie

June 30, 2009

Here we go the 3 words are, drum roll please:

Breathtaking: Because when you walk into Melville Lounge for the closing ceremonies on Friday night after a week of grueling 8am-11pm days with amazing service and see that much energy, excitement and emotion its the only natural reaction. Seeing the end product and the change in the first years, the staff members and us as coordinators really is mind blowing, and can occasionally stop you from breathing-be cautious.

Inspiring: This program cuts summer a week short for 750 college students to do community service? and they do it voluntarily? You must be kidding! Its inspiring to see the dedication, the passion and the enthusiasm that every Fysoper and Fystaff has for community service and the change that we can make in just one week.

Unforgettable: Because of all the great things that I’ve experienced at BU my two FYSOPS have left me with so many ridiculous experiences and amazing friends. But most importantly I’ve developed a t thirst for service and a knowledge of the issues that will always keep me doing community service during my career here at BU and beyond.

Keep it green guys and keep turning in those applications

Environment

June 19, 2009

What’s going ON everyone? Environment coming at ya.

Here in Boston it’s absolutely beautiful and everything is starting to get rolling. We can’t wait to see all our lovely staff and students in August but for now we’ve got plenty of stuff to do in order to help save the environment. Especially here in Boston, lots of stuff is going on that you should know:offshore_wind_turbine

Just two weeks ago, Governor Deval Patrick gave the go ahead for the Cape Cod Wind Project on Nantucket Sound. The plan has been in the works for seven years and it finally looks like it’s going to happen. When installed the energy from the wind turbines will power more than 500,000 homes in Massachusetts and provide jobs for hundreds of people in the area.

In a study that came out in March, Boston was declared the 11th best city in America for Energy Star buildings. Energy star buildings are buildings that use 35% less energy and emit 35% less Carbon dioxide than regular buildings.

We just got back from a site visit at the Serving Ourselves Farm in Quincy and had a great time. The 2.5 acre organic farm provides food for a local organic food market and a homeless shelter. It’s an absolutely beautiful site right by the water, and should be a ton of fun for our freshmen and staff in August as they’ll be harvesting a wide variety of veggies.

We’ve still got a lot to work on including our Education Day packet which has an awesome theme although we cannot reveal it just yet. We’re still working on booking sites but it looks like we’ll be heading to the Zoo, to several farms, doing beach cleanups along the cape and possibly working with the Audubon Society.

Thanks for reading and remember the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in your every day life.

Keep it green,

Maddie and Seth

ENVIRONMENT!

June 15, 2009

Hey everyone!

It’s Maddie and Seth, your fabulous Environment coordinators for FYSOP 20!! We’re hitting the ground running and are already working hard on our Ed Day packet and booking sites. We are trying to find a lot of new and amazing sites and so far we’ve already been in contact with a local farmer who has installed a wind turbine on his property, the Franklin Park Zoo, and Buzzards Bay at Wood’s Hole.

Last Friday for World Environment Day we went to see the movie Home at the ICA here in Boston. The movie highlighted the environmental issues that the world is facing today.  We both loved it…Maddie even became a VEGETARIAN because of it!  Everyone should watch it.  Here’s the link, it’s free online: http://www.youtube.com/homeproject

We hope that everyone’s really excited about FYSOP 20, it’s a big year for us and will definitely be our best.

Mmm….Environment… We Durrtayy

July 4, 2008

Hey All!

Let us first start out by saying— ENVIRONMENT 19… WE DURRTAYYY!! Our names are Ariana and Kyle and we are the FYSOP 19 Environment Coordinators for this summer! We have already started counting down the days to FYSOP 19…52 days!

We are so excited to be working with the Environmental Organizations around Boston this summer! We have some excellent sites already lined up ( Wellfleet on the Cape, Kettle Pond Farm, Esplanade association.. the list goes on!)

We are actually both pretty new to environmental community service, but let us tell you- we are learning so much! For example, did you know that the average person uses 80-100 gallons of water a day, furthermore, if we do not control our water usage there is going to be roughly 36 states with severe water droughts by 2050. Eek! We have also been talking with some wonderful people in the greater Boston community who are excited to come talk to incoming students to teach them what they know. We have people coming in to potentially talk about the ever controversial subject… climate change… or even the Boston Harbour clean-up project!

We will be keeping you updated throughout the summer- to let you know what we are doing and what we have planned!

Much Environment Love,

Ariana and Kyle
