This year, the First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP) is 22 years old. It has grown and expanded throughout the years, and is now a 5-day service project for about 1,000 Boston University first-year students. Although in the past FYSOP hasn’t focused specifically on its presence on the web and in various media, as we grow up we need to plunge into the real world – and the virtual one. We’ve made a few attempts before, comparable to the first MySpace account an adolescent makes, then grows bored with after a couple weeks. But as FYSOP expands, we need to as well. So this year we’re aiming to be more accessible to our volunteers, staff, and the BU community through our blog, which will be updated weekly (as well as issue area blogs updated regularly throughout the summer), and through other social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.
This is the first of many posts, and as we update, we want to hear from you – are you excited for FYSOP? Have you found us at karaoke and belted out our favorite tunes? What issue areas do you want to hear more about?
Let us know – because we still have our “MySpace era” friends, but as we get older, we want more interaction with more people. Here’s a preview of some of the things you’ll see from us:
While you’re waiting for our next post, be sure to check out our issue area blogs – our coordinators have been working hard to bring you information and updates about each of their issue areas and the problems we’ll be working with this year.
